Dr. Kala Fleming is a Research Scientist in the IBM Research – Africa Lab, headquartered in Nairobi, Kenya. She develops solutions and leads projects that improve urban water security, agricultural water management and public health. Prior to joining IBM, she set up The FHWGroup, LLC, an award winning research and advisory firm, that supports community development by focusing on youth, business and natural resources.
Over the last 10 years, Dr. Fleming has worked with a range of water stakeholders in the US, Caribbean and Africa. She has advised local governments and has partnered with federal agencies, NGOs and the private sector to forge initiatives that advance human development and the protection of natural resources. Her prior engagements with leading organizations such the US Environmental Protection Agency, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Campbell Soup and American Water provide the deep cross-sector insights that she leverages to drive innovation in her current role.
Dr. Fleming earned her Bachelor’s degree from the University of the Virgin Islands in Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas and her PhD in Environmental Engineering from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
