The East African Community is home to 150 million from six countries in the African Great Lakes region of eastern Africa: Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, South Sudan, Tanzania, and Uganda. The TED community has grown steadily in the region, with hundreds of TEDx events having taken place already, in a variety of interesting settings, both rural and urban. There have also been innovative events launched here, such as TEDx in a Box, launched in the Kenyan slums of Kibera, which equips organizers with special resources to hold TEDx events in challenging settings –

TEDx was created in the spirit of TED’s mission, “ideas worth spreading.” It supports independent organizers who want to create a TED-like event in their own community. Since the beginning of the TEDx program in 2009, nearly 15,000 events have been held in every corner of the globe. And now, a new TEDx milestone has been reached: one billion views of TEDx Talks.

TEDx events unleash fresh ideas from local communities. Close to 50,000 talks has been given at 10,000 events since the program launched in 2009.

The TEDx East Africa Organizers Workshop event will be held alongside the preparations for the TEDNairobi Ideas search auditions on Feb 7th, 2017, at the Catholic University of East Africa (CUEA).  The curator of TED Chris Anderson and the TED leadership team from New York will be present, so we can watch and learn from the Master at work. TED Staff will also share important technical tips, showing how a commitment to excellence in storytelling and curation has made the conference and TEDTalks the most network sharing expertise on a diverse range of topics in the world.

We are expecting about 60 TEDx Organisers at this workshop, the agenda will include presentations by fellow organizers on topics such as finding event partners, attracting media attention, and selecting and preparing speakers.

We hope that this workshop will not only build internal capacity of TEDx Organizer help us to support and encourage each other to be more ambitious, aspiring to create platforms for transformation across the African region.
